BRICS countries — Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates has generated 51% of global solar electricity in 2024, according to the latest Ember report. This marked a sharp increase from 15% recorded just over a decade ago. China contributed the largest share at 39%, followed by India at 6.3% and Brazil at 3.5%, placing these three among the world’s top five solar producers. Solar generation across BRICS countries continued to grow in early 2025. Between January and April, China added 98 TW of solar electricity, India 14.1 TW and Brazil 7.9 TW compared to the same period in 2024. In 2024, solar met 36% of the overall increase in BRICS electricity generation, while all clean sources combined accounted for 70%. China’s solar output alone covered 41% of its electricity growth that year. However, solar deployment in some BRICS countries — including Indonesia, Egypt and Russia — remains limited.
