UNDP, a United Nations development agency supporting infrastructure programmes, has inaugurated five solar-hybrid and digitally monitored health facilities in Burundi. The inauguration was held on 10 February 2026 at Kibumbu District Hospital with the Minister of Public Health and Global Fund representatives present. Phase 1 has become fully operational across the five sites, each providing 16 to 17 hours of backup electricity. Solar systems are supplying 50% to 90% of facility energy needs depending on location. Phase 2 is underway and will extend the model to nine additional district hospitals. Each  hospital under Phase 2 will be equipped with 45 kWp of PV capacity and 115 kWh of battery storage, providing 12 to 25 hours of backup power. Phase 1 required $943,885 for the installation and commissioning of five solar-hybrid health facilities, while Phase 2 will add nearly $1.67 million under a broader $2.21 million Global Fund programme. The programme is projected to reduce more than 548,3 tons of COâ‚‚ annually across the supported facilities.
