Solarcentury Africa’s 19.3 MW Gerus solar PV plant in Namibia has reached commercial operation and began selling electricity on the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). The project became Namibia’s first merchant solar plant and Africa’s second purpose-built merchant solar facility to trade on SAPP, following the 25 MW Mailo plant in Zambia commissioned in July 2025. Gerus was developed in partnership with Sino Energy and completed after a 12-month construction period. The plant was wholly owned by Solarcentury Africa, with project funding provided by BB Energy, while electricity sales were handled by Solarcentury Trading, a registered SAPP member. The facility is designed to generate about 50.8 GWh annually and up to 275 construction jobs. Regulatory and grid coordination involved NamPower, the Electricity Control Board of Namibia and SAPP. The Construction was already underway on the 34 MW Mailo Phase 2 expansion, targeted for commercial operation in Q2 2026.
