Scatec ASA, a Norway-based renewable energy provider, has started commercial operation of the 273 MW Grootfontein solar power plant in South Africa. The plant generated predictable revenues from a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA). The company stated that the project was its first in the Western Cape and the first solar facility to reach commercial operation date (COD) under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) Round 5. The plant was expected to produce 700 GWh annually with an estimated reduction of 630,000 tons of CO₂. Scatec held 51% of the project, while H1 Holdings owned 46.5 percent and the Grootfontein Local Community Trust held 2.5%. The company also provided operation, maintenance and asset-management services.
