Lightsource bp, a UK-based solar energy company, is currently facing wide opposition to its 867 MW Sophia Solar Park in Portugal. The project proposal has been widely criticized due to environmental concerns, as the Environmental Impact Study has identified construction-phase impacts including deforestation, habitat disturbance and landscape alteration near several historic villages. Lightsource bp plans mitigation including a 228-hectare green-structure programme, preservation of protected oaks and planting 27,000 native trees. Lightsource bp emphasises that design refinement will continue with regulators as consultation progresses. The Sophia project is currently in its initial licensing phase, with commissioning formally scheduled for 2030. The company has stated the initiative will supply over 370,000 homes, involving an investment of around €590 million (~$684.4 million). Earlier this year, Lightsource bp was engaging with French associations on agrivoltaic challenges and opportunities.
