Germany-based Blue Elephant Energy has signed two long-term PPAs with DB Energie for about 2.5 terawatt hours of solar power to supply Deutsche Bahn. The electricity was planned to come from two large solar parks in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg scheduled for operation by mid-2027. The contracts, with terms of up to 13 years, enabled DB to secure output needed for roughly 14 million ICE train kilometers each year. The Schafhöfen solar park in Bavaria was set to reach 266 MW and become Germany’s second-largest solar park. It was planned to use about 370,000 modules across more than 300 soccer fields and include a battery storage system with an on-site substation. The Aulendorf solar park added 53 MW. DB reported sourcing about 70% of its traction power from renewable energy and it stated that all stations, depots, offices and facilities were supplied with green electricity from 2025.
