Africa has installed record 4.5 GW of solar PV capacity in 2025, up 54% year over year, according to the Global Solar Council. Eight countries were added at least 100 MW each, doubling the 2024 tally. Battery energy storage imports surged to extend solar use after dark. South Africa have remained the largest market, topping 10 GW after adding 1.6 GW, with plans for 10 GW more solar and 8.5 GW of storage by 2030. Egypt led North Africa with 5.5 GW under construction and 13 GW in pre-construction, while the wider region added 1.1 GW. Nigeria installed a record 803 MW and approved new net-metering rules. Kenya, Ethiopia, Botswana, Tanzania and Zimbabwe advanced supportive policies and grid reforms. African nations imported $2 billion of Chinese solar modules and $2.6 billion of battery systems in 2025. Falling component prices could accelerate deployment further through 2030.
