The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy has launched the Solar (Photovoltaic) Energy Self-Supply Policy to enable photovoltaic self-supply, solar water heating and optional battery storage alongside continued grid consumption. The policy formed part of the Abu Dhabi Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy 2030 and aimed to improve daytime electricity efficiency through greater use of solar generation. It supported demand management by increasing on-site photovoltaic consumption. A guidance manual on high-efficiency appliances was also launched to complement solar adoption and optimise electricity use across end-uses. The policy is applied first to agriculture, rest houses, and ranches, allowing these users to deploy photovoltaic systems and solar water heaters. Battery storage supported the use of solar electricity during evening hours. The policy was intended to improve grid efficiency, strengthen security of supply, support energy-sector planning and align with wider efficiency, emissions-reduction and climate strategies.
