Associated British Ports(ABP), UK port operator, has secured approval for the 40 MWp Barrow Energy Dock floating solar project. The approval was granted by Westmorland & Furness Council, by confirming regulatory clearance for the planned installation. ABP has stated that the decision has advanced its wider energy resilience plans for the Barrow and Furness region. The company has explained that the project is intended to support the advanced manufacturing sector with locally generated power. The floating installation is planned to use approximately 47,000 panels mounted on anchored pontoons. ABP has confirmed that one-third of the dock area is expected to be covered by the array. The company has also noted that existing dock leisure activity is planned to continue during operations. The facility is expected to generate electricity matching the yearly consumption of roughly 14,000 homes.
