The Sarawak Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China Three Gorges International Ltd and Shanghai Electric Power T&D Group Co. Ltd. The agreement, formalised at the SNEC 2025 PV Expo in Shanghai, aims to explore the development of up to 1GW of floating solar at the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant reservoir through joint feasibility studies. This initiative builds on Sarawaks earlier success with a 50MW floating solar plant at Batang Ai, commissioned in December 2024. Sarawak currently has 5,900MW of generation capacity, primarily from hydropower, and targets 10GW by 2030 and 15GW by 2035, with renewables accounting for over 60% of the mix.
