LONGi Green Energy Technology, a China-based PV manufacturer, has announced plans to replace silver with base metals in solar cells. The company has stated that mass production using base metals is scheduled to begin in the second quarter. LONGi has cited record-high silver prices as a key driver of the decision. Silver currently accounts for 14% of solar module production costs, compared with 5% two years earlier. The company filing has indicated that the transition may reduce costs by RMB 0.02 yuan per watt. LONGi has explained that its back-contact solar cell technology supports easier material substitution than TOPCon approaches. In addition to PV cell material adjustments, the company has stated that its energy storage business will focus on China, Europe, the US, and Australia. Recently, LONGi has conducted mobile truck promotions and in-person workshops across Iraq to raise professional solar product awareness.
