The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), a UAE-based intergovernmental organization, has reported on a solar-powered aquaculture project in Nanjing, China. Plant Manager, Cheng Youhe manages the 146.7-hectare farm, which integrates a 50 MWp floating PV system. The floating installation generates 60 million kWh of electricity annually for seafood farming operations. Solar panels are mounted on water structures above fish ponds to optimize land use. During summer months, the panels reduce pond temperatures by 3–5°C, limiting heat-related stress. Annual production has reached up to 175 tons of Chinese mitten crabs. Increased farm output has raised partner farmers’ incomes, with some earning over $138,000 yearly. China accounted for around 63% of global PV capacity expansion in 2024, supporting broader renewable deployment.
