The City of Cape Town has initiated the construction of a 7 MW solar plant in Atlantis, reducing its reliance on Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned electricity supplier. This project, which will also include 5 MW of battery storage, is part of a broader plan to combat the country’s persistent load-shedding issues and mitigate the impact of Eskom’s rising electricity prices. The City Mayor emphasized that the power generated by the solar plant would be cheaper than Eskom’s price. The project is also expected to create local jobs and contribute to economic development in Atlantis. The city also plans to roll out additional solar projects and explore the option of purchasing power from independent producers in the future.
