France-based TotalEnergies has started building Iraq’s first utility-scale solar farm in Basra. The project forms part of a $27 billion agreement with the Iraqi government. This package includes gas capture, seawater treatment, and oil production upgrades. The solar plant will have a total capacity of 1GW. The first 250MW is set to become operational by year-end. Once completed, the project is expected to reduce emissions and cut electricity imports. It will supply clean power to thousands of homes and businesses. Iraq’s Minister of Electricity confirmed the project’s timeline. Construction is creating local jobs and strengthening Iraq’s energy infrastructure. The solar farm is designed to ease pressure on the national grid. It supports Iraq’s broader plan to shift from oil dependence. Full commissioning is expected within the next few years.
