First Solar, based in Arizona, has entered a TOPCon patent licensing agreement with Talon PV, a US manufacturer of crystalline photovoltaic cells. The deal grants Talon PV access to First Solar’s Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact (TOPCon) patents, enabling the production of n-type solar cells in the US. Talon PV will utilize First Solar's patented technology at its upcoming facility, which is anticipated to begin operations by Q1 2026, with an expected annual production capacity of 4 GW within a year. First Solar had acquired the TOPCon patent portfolio in 2013 through its purchase of TetraSun, Inc. The patents are valid in multiple jurisdictions globally, with validity extending beyond 2030.
