A global integrated chemicals and energy company, Sasol has officially inaugurated the 97.5 MW Damlaagte PV Facility near Parys, Free State. The solar plant supplies renewable power to Sasol Secunda Operations, where Air Liquide runs the largest oxygen production site. The project, led by Mainstream Renewable Power in partnership with Thembelihle Trust, which marked the first installation under Sasol and Air Liquide’s 900 MW joint renewable energy initiative. The construction began in November 2023 and was completed in August 2025. The solar plant connects to the Eskom grid and generates about 270 million kWh of power annually. Around 2,000 local workers were employed during construction and over 150 community members received training to prepare for future jobs in the renewable energy sector. Plus MAMSA and Power China Maanda JV manage its operation and maintenance. The project has advanced both companies’ decarbonisation goals and contributed to South Africa’s broader industrial energy transition.
