Octopus Energy Group, the global clean energy tech business, has invested in MOPO, a solar energy company operating a pay-per-use battery rental model across Sub-Saharan Africa. MOPO’s proprietary solar-charged batteries replaced expensive, polluting petrol generators in areas with no or unstable grid access. Its two battery sizes supported both household and business use, including lighting, fridges, and electric motorbikes. MOPO’s local solar hubs created thousands of green jobs and were managed via a digital distribution platform. With 1,200 employees and 300% annual revenue growth, MOPO scaled rapidly. The partnership aligned with Octopus’ goal of accelerating clean energy access for 600 million underserved people in the region.
