The UK government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has rejected the Morocco-UK energy link. The GBP 24 billion (~$ 824.45 million) project planned to supply solar and wind power via 3,800 km-long HVDC subsea cables. It included 10.5 GW of solar and wind generation, 20 GWh of storage, and a 3.6 GW interconnector. Xlinks, backed by Octopus Energy Group, led the proposal. The project received Nationally Significant Infrastructure status in September 2023. Xlinks claimed solar panels in Morocco could supply up to 8% of UK power. The company also sought fixed-price contracts through the Contracts for Difference scheme. DESNZ said the project carried delivery and security risks and did not support domestic energy growth. Xlinks is now exploring alternatives.
