Potomac Edison and Mon Power, subsidiaries of FirstEnergy, have completed a 5.75 MW solar project in Marlowe, Berkeley County, West Virginia. This project marks their third utility-scale solar installation in the state. Built on a reclaimed 36-acre ash landfill, the site features over 17,000 US-made solar panels and was constructed with 54 local union workers. This project contributes to West Virginia’s 2020 solar legislation, which allows electric companies to develop up to 200 MW of solar capacity. With this addition, the companies now operate 30 MW across three sites and plan to reach a total of 50 MW through five projects. The program also generates Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs), which are available for purchase by customers including NETL and the town of Harpers Ferry.
