Kenya-based Mombasa Cement Ltd commissioned a 9.85 MW grid-tied solar plant at its Vipingo facility in Kilifi County. The project was constructed by Equator Energy and financed through Cygnum Capital’s Facility for Energy Inclusion.The project was one of the largest private solar plants in the region, built to generate about 18 million kWh of power each year. It gave Mombasa Cement a steady and cheaper source of electricity while cutting emissions and improving energy security. At the time, Equator Energy had 53 MW of projects running across East and Southern Africa.
