Masdar and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) have begun construction on the world’s first gigascale, round-the-clock renewable energy project in Abu Dhabi. The facility integrates a 5.2 GW solar photovoltaic plant with a 19 GWh battery energy storage system, the largest and most advanced of its kind. It is designed to deliver 1 GW of continuous baseload power, it addresses renewable intermittency at a globally competitive tariff. The $6 billion project is expected to create over 10,000 jobs and avoid 5.7 million tons of COâ‚‚ emissions annually. It is scheduled for completion by 2027 and the system uses AI-based forecasting and intelligent dispatch for optimized performance. Masdar said the development supports the UAE’s strategy to meet rising energy demand from artificial intelligence industries while reinforcing its global leadership in clean power innovation.
