The Government of Israel has approved a national program to install solar canopies on public sports facilities. The initiative is supported by an ILS 34 million (~$ 10.13 million) budget for 2025. It includes a three-year permit exemption for water corporations and broader regulatory relief. A policy document from the Ministry of Energy outlines the plan’s goals and implementation path. Over 3,500 fields across the country were identified, with a potential capacity of 500 MW. This could supply 5.5% of the additional energy needed for Israel’s 2030 renewable target. The program also aims to add 3,000 dunams of shaded public space. It enables local authorities to turn sports fields into energy-producing, multipurpose assets. Proposed solutions include funding tracks, streamlined planning, and greater public awareness. The initiative supports energy security, community access, and urban climate resilience.
