Idemitsu Australia, an energy company, has completed and begun operating a 5 MW solar farm at the Boggabri Coal Mine to offset grid electricity use and reduce emissions. Commissioned in late September 2025, the project supplies renewable power during daylight hours and is expected to cut around 5,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually, lowering the mine’s Scope 2 emissions by 40 %. The next phase includes installing a 12.6 MWh vanadium flow battery, approved for completion in late 2026, which will provide 6.3 hours of storage to optimise solar output and reduce grid reliance. It is set to become Australia’s largest VFB installation and the first in the mining sector. Both the solar and battery projects have supported local employment during construction and operations.
