China-headquartered Huawei and Ethio Telecom have completed Africa’s first Solar-on-Tower deployment in Addis Ababa. The solution has integrated photovoltaic panels on telecom towers to address severe land and space shortages. Thousands of sites in the capital were facing challenges with traditional ground-based solar systems. Installation was completed in just two days, and each site now generates its own solar power for up to four hours. Diesel generator reliance was reduced from six hours to two hours, marking a 40% cut in fuel use per site. The approach is the first to offer a viable clean energy option for space-constrained telecom infrastructure in Africa. Ethio Telecom and Huawei confirmed they would continue enhancing ICT energy infrastructure to improve efficiency, resilience, and cleaner network operationsAddisAbaba across Ethiopia.
