Slovenia’s state-owned utility Holding SlovenskeElektrarne (HSE) planned a 140 MW floating solar plant at Lake Družmirje near Šoštanj. The project, estimated at €100 million ($116.6 million), was to be financed through HSE funds, loans, and the EU Just Transition Fund. It was designed to cover up to half the lake’s surface, surpassing Europe’s existing largest 74.3 MW floating solar facility in France. The Spatial planning was in progress, with approval expected by late 2025 after public consultation. Construction was planned for mid-2026 and electricity production was expected to start in early 2027. The plant was designed to generate 140 GWh a year which is enough to supply about 35,000 households. HSE’s subsidiary HSE SaŠa was set to operate the plant under EU tender rules, while the lakeside area was to be developed for community use.
