Newzealand-based power company, Genesis has completed New Zealand’s largest solar farm at Lauriston on the Canterbury Plains with its joint venture partner FRV Australia, Renewable energy developer. The solar farm cost $104 million and has a capacity of 63 MW. It uses over 90,000 panels spread across 93 hectares and can generate up to 100 GWh of electricity each year, enough to power nearly 13,000 households. It marked Genesis' first project towards a 500 MW solar target. Around 100 people were employed during construction, and three roles were created for ongoing operations. A sponsorship agreement was signed with Lauriston School to support STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, underpinned by mātauranga Māori) education. Experience from Lauriston would be applied to upcoming Genesis projects in Leeston, Edgecumbe and Foxton. Genesis’ completion of the Lauriston solar farm followed its acquisition of a 114 MW solar project from Helios Energy.
