The UK government announced a GBP 180 million (~$233.14 million) plan to install solar panels on 200 schools and 200 hospitals through its new state-owned company, Great British Energy. This was the first major project by the company and aimed to cut energy bills and lower emissions. School leaders and NHS managers supported the move, saying it would help ease pressure from high energy costs. Some critics, including the acting shadow energy secretary, said the plan could risk energy security. Experts say using solar panels could reduce the need for gas imports. The project followed a similar earlier scheme that gave nearly £3 billion (~$3.88 billion) to public buildings. The rollout will start by summer 2025, focusing on areas with the greatest need. Though the project covers less than 1% of schools, education groups said it was a positive step. Great British Energy is based in the UK.
