France-headquartered Générale du Solaire has completed a 20 MW floating solar power plant in Leutenheim, Bas-Rhin, France. It is the first large-scale floating solar project in Alsace and Eastern France, developed in partnership with Ciel & Terre. The project repurposes a former gravel pit into a renewable energy source. The plant, consisting of two islands, generates 21,750 MWh annually, meeting the electricity needs of 7,250 homes (excluding heating) and avoiding 1,392 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. It took five years to develop and six months to build, with active collaboration from local authorities. The project uses Ciel & Terre’s Hydrelio aiR Optim technology for efficiency and maintenance, with a carefully designed anchoring system to handle variable water levels. It is part of Ciel & Terre’s larger initiative, which completed over 100 MW of floating solar projects in 2024.
