FTC Solar, Inc. has introduced an automated 80° high angle stow capability for its 1P Pioneer tracker to reduce hail damage. The feature is powered by SUNOPS software and is designed to tilt modules steeply when hailstorms are detected. At this angle, the panels present less surface area, and hailstones strike at glancing angles, lowering impact damage. The system has been integrated with SUNOPS, enabling automatic or manual stow actions based on storm alerts and user-defined thresholds. Once conditions improve, trackers are returned to normal positions, minimizing downtime. The 1P Pioneer’s drive system ensures consistent movement, while structural dampers maintain stability at steep angles. Operators are able to adjust hail response parameters such as thresholds, stow direction, and release timing according to site-specific risks.
