Egypt is intensifying efforts to localize its renewable energy industry. Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat confirmed new rules are being developed to ensure 60% local content in solar and wind projects. He added that the ministry’s wider plan also targeted local manufacturing of electrical equipment, promotion of domestic industry, and modernization of the unified grid. Esmat met with Lyu Zexiang, CEO of China Energy International (CEECOIC), to advance cooperation in technology transfer and local production. CEECOIC has relocated its North and West Africa headquarters to Cairo and outlined plans to establish a 1 GW solar power plant, a 600 MW battery storage facility, and a separate 1,000 MW storage project. The meeting built on talks held earlier during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit.
