France-based EDF Renewables, part of the EDF Group, has opened a 4 MW solar power plant in Martinique, built on a lava flow near Saint-Pierre. It aimed to reduce Martinique’s heavy use of fuel oil, which supplies 73% of its electricity. The plant can provide power for about 7,500 people. EDF Renewables also prepared the land for farming, giving free access to a sheep farmer and a beekeeper through a partnership with SCACOM. The company supported other local projects, including cocoa planting and land recovery. More than €2 million (~$2.25 million) in work was given to local companies, and the EPICES group helped involve workers in rehabilitation during construction. This follows Axpo and EDF Renewables Hellas signed a 102 MW solar PPA covering the Skala Korinis and Loutsa solar power plants in Greece.
