Germany-headquartered Aquila Clean Energy EMEA, an hybrid clean energy solutions, has started construction of a 52 MW agrivoltaics project in Catania, Sicily. The project spans 100 hectares and combines solar generation with the cultivation of olive trees, herbs, and vegetables. It is part of a 4.4 GW solar and battery storage portfolio that Aquila manages in Italy. The project is set to finish by March 2026. It is built to power 27,000 homes and help avoid 24,000 tons of CO₂ emissions each year. Aquila has designated 11 hectares for wildlife refuge and 7 hectares for a water-lamination pond. This is the company’s first project in Italy to reach the construction stage since it began operations there in 2020.
