The Bundesnetzagentur reported a 12% YoY increase in installed capacity for renewables in 2023, reaching just under 170 GW, with a total growth of 17 GW. Germany’s solar capacity increased 14.1 GW in 2023, almost double that of 2022. Private solar installations, along with a notable rise in ground-mounted and commercial rooftop solar capacity are the main contributors to this increase. The Bavaria region led in new solar capacity with 3.5 GW added in 2023, bringing Germany’s total installed PV capacity to 81.7 GW by the year end. Approximately 70% of privately operated solar installations were equipped with a storage system in 2023. The Bundesnetzagentur recorded about 260,000 plug-in balcony solar modules in 2023, three times more than in 2022, constituting 0.2 GW of the total PV capacity growth in Germany. It is suggested that the actual number of balcony modules might be higher, as not all modules may have been registered.
