Denmark-based renewable developer, European Energy, has secured approval for Queensland’s Upper Calliope Solar Farm. The 1.1 GW project near Gladstone has progressed toward design, grid processes, and construction preparation. According to European Energy, planning consent has materially reduced development risk and strengthened investment readiness. The project’s full output is contracted to Rio Tinto under a 25-year power purchase agreement. Rio Tinto, an Anglo-Australian mining company, was expected to use power for Queensland operations. As per European Energy, proximity to existing transmission has supported integration with industrial load centres. With approval secured, European Energy has moved the solar farm into advanced development. Remaining milestones have included grid connection finalisation, procurement activities, and final investment decisions. European Energy, headquartered in Copenhagen, has continued assessing ownership and partnership options across Australia. Recently, European Energy has secured 20 long-term electricity offtake agreements in 2025.
