The Allan Labor Government of Australia has approved the 330 MW Barwon Solar Farm near Geelong to power nearly 140,000 homes annually. A 250 MW battery system was also proposed to support evening demand for over 86,000 homes. The project was backed by the Albanese Labor Government’s Capacity Investment Scheme to replace ageing coal-fired power with renewable energy. It was part of the Development Facilitation Program, expanded in 2024 to fast-track renewable and battery projects. Since then, 10 projects worth over $1 billion were approved, with potential to power more than 470,000 homes. The program aimed to reduce delays previously caused by VCAT. Victoria had the lowest wholesale power prices, and the national grid reached over 40 percent reliable renewables this decade.
