Xcel Energy, a US-based electric utility, has announced an electric service agreement with Google to supply electricity for a Pine Island, Minnesota data center through 1.9 GW of new clean energy resources. The clean energy portfolio will provide 1.4 GW of wind, 200 MW of solar and 300 MW of long-duration energy storage, alongside a $50 million investment in the Capacity*Connect Program. According to the agreement, Google has committed to pay all costs associated with new electric service infrastructure, including grid upgrades required for the data center project. The storage component features a 300 MW iron-air battery system capable of delivering approximately 30 GWh of energy with a 100-hour discharge duration. The Electric Service Agreement will be filed with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission for regulatory review before implementation.
