U.S. Customs and Border Protection said it was investigating Waaree Energies for allegedly mislabeling Chinese-made solar cells and panels as Indian to avoid U.S. tariffs. The agency stated there was reasonable suspicion and required cash deposits during the probe. The investigation followed requests from the American Alliance for Solar Manufacturing Trade Committee, which includes Qcells and First Solar. Imports of Indian panels had increased after tariffs were imposed on four Southeast Asian suppliers, while U.S. duties on Chinese panels have remained for over a decade. The Alliance supported the probe and earlier asked the Commerce Department to extend antidumping and countervailing tariffs to imports from India, Indonesia, and Laos. Waaree’s attorney and spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
