UL Solutions, a US-based applied safety science company, has launched a testing and certification program for plug-in solar systems. The framework is intended to support safer installation and use of plug-in solar systems across the US. The program is based on UL 3700, which defines construction, performance, and labeling requirements for interactive plug-in PV equipment. UL Solutions has stated that the framework addresses safety risks such as overload conditions and unintended current flow. Plug-in solar systems differ from rooftop PV installations because they connect to household circuits through plugs. The framework requires features that mitigate accidental contact with hazardous parts and promote safe installation. Utah has allowed up to 1.2 kW plug-in systems, while several other states are considering similar legislation. The testing framework is intended to support emerging state-level regulatory efforts.
