California based SMUD has announced on January 5, 2026 that it ended the power purchase agreement signed in 2021 with DE Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI) for the Coyote Creek Agrivoltaic Ranch project. The decision followed continued uncertainty surrounding the project’s development. SMUD cited factors including import restrictions, rising prices, tax fees, construction delays, environmental impacts and pending legal cases. The utility stated that these unresolved issues affected the project’s feasibility. SMUD acknowledged prior coordination with DE Shaw Renewable Investments and Sacramento County during the process. The utility also stated that it continued to pursue a flexible approach toward removing carbon emissions from its energy sources by 2030.
