US based REC Solar contracted with Arctic Cold on a 3.3 MW rooftop solar system at Arctic Cold’s new Santa Maria, California facility. The system is designed to offset about 83% of the site’s electricity demand and avoid an estimated 2,953 metric tons of CO₂ annually. Arctic Cold expected first-year energy savings of about $850 k under a power purchase agreement that limited exposure to electricity price changes. The facility served fresh and frozen food distribution and operated continuously, making energy a major operating cost. The site is designed to allow future battery energy storage integration, while Arctic Cold retained renewable energy credits and pursued LEED certification. Under the IPP model, Arctic Cold incurred no upfront capital costs and did not manage system design, construction, or operations. The project involved local union labor from IBEW and was positioned as a scalable, lower-energy approach for cold storage facilities.
