Lightstar Renewables, a Boston-based community solar developer, has completed the Plains Road Agrivoltaics project at DiMartino Farm in Montgomery, New York. The project has been designed to power 466 homes annually and support hay production alongside two acres of vegetable farming. Lightstar Renewables has stated that the project aligns with Smart Solar principles developed by American Farmland Trust for dual energy-agriculture land use. The Town of Montgomery has amended zoning laws by changing height, setback, and lot coverage rules to enable agrivoltaics development. SolAg, a Massachusetts-based agricultural consulting firm, has provided technical support to integrate agricultural activities into the design of facility. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for September 2025, and Lightstar Renewables has planned to replicate the model across additional municipalities.
