MHG Solar, a US-based solar project developer, has proposed an industrial-scale PV project on agricultural land in Vermont, US. The proposal involves installing approximately 14,000 solar panels across 27 acres of a 44-acre hayfield near the town center and an existing electrical substation in Lowell. Electricity generated by the project would be sold to Vermont Electric Co-op, with the associated renewable energy credits applied toward state requirements. The project is currently under review by the Vermont Public Utility Commission, which will determine whether it serves the long-term public good. The Lowell select board and the Northeast Vermont Development Association have opposed the proposal, citing inconsistencies with local and regional plans. A town vote to raise funds for legal action against the project resulted in an 86 - 86 tie. Following the vote, the town’s elected executive governing body authorized up to $10,000 in legal expenses using unallocated budget funds.
