UK based Lightsource bp and Toyota Motor North America have finalized a 15-year fixed-rate virtual power purchase agreement for electricity from the 231 MW Jones City 2 solar project. The project is in Jones County, Texas, and entered construction in spring 2025. The project formed part of the 700 MW Jones City Energy Center. The energy center includes Jones City 1 Solar, Jones City 2 Solar, and a planned energy storage facility. It was designed to generate electricity equivalent to the consumption of around 96,000 homes. The energy center was expected to contribute about $86 million in lifetime property tax revenue to local public services. Construction activity was projected to create around 500 jobs. Local hiring was supported during the construction phase. The site layout incorporated sheep grazing under the solar panels. Separately, Lightsource bp has expanded its solar footprint in Latin America by forming a joint venture with Petrobras to develop utility-scale solar projects in Brazil.
