First Solar, a thin film manufacturer, has signed a non-exclusive patent licensing agreement with Oxford PV, gaining access to its issued and pending perovskite patents. The license enables continued development of thin film photovoltaic devices using perovskite semiconductors. The scope covers potential manufacturing and distribution in the US, excluding crystalline silicon semiconductors. First Solar has invested over $2 billion in thin film R&D and operates a perovskite development line in Perrysburg, Ohio. First Solar operates five US plants and is building a sixth in South Carolina is expected online in the second half of 2026, adding 3.7 GW and lifting total capacity to about 18 GW in 2027.
