DOE redirected $365M for Puerto Rico grid fix with local ties

The US Department of Energy redirected $365 million in funding to address Puerto Rico’s grid resiliency and expand access to affordable, reliable, and secure power. The funding, from the Puerto Rico Resilience Fund, would support practical fixes and emergency activities for critical facilities. The decision followed recent island-wide blackouts and aimed at deploying immediate solutionsThe funding had originally been designated in December 2024 for rooftop solar and battery storage installations scheduled to begin in 2026. The redirection prioritized technologies that improve system flexibility, power flow, supply security, and safety. DOE coordinated with local officials and stakeholders to ensure effective use of funds.
